Sofiya: Senior Expert Modeling

As a modeling specialist at Aurubis, my daily work life is incredibly varied due to the wide range of modeling areas I engage with. I particularly value the cross-site exchange and collaboration with different departments.

We develop optimization tools for logistics and production, often witnessing their direct application on-site. This hands-on, interdisciplinary work makes my role at Aurubis especially rewarding.

Daniel: Team Lead Data Science

The diverse range of production processes at Aurubis is exciting because we continuously explore new application areas for our methods. Collaborating with a wide array of experts is central to developing models and analyses.

In the field of Data Science & Artificial Intelligence, we analyze large data volumes from sensors and laboratories using statistics, data visualization, and AI. Identified patterns, such as those for the early detection of less efficient batches, are directly integrated into the operational process.

Pascal: PI Developer

As part of the data engineering team at Aurubis, I develop and manage our data platform, which serves as the foundation for data-driven applications. Collaborating closely with data science and modeling teams makes the work diverse and engaging.

I design and automate ETL pipelines and provide advice on programming, visualization, and data architecture. I especially value working with metals as tangible products for digitalization and the energy transition, as well as collaborating with people from diverse backgrounds.

Christos: Senior Expert Modeling

Developing digital tools at Aurubis is always exciting. In various projects, I collaborate with colleagues from all areas, learning something new every day and seeing the tools we create in action. This gives me the feeling of truly making a difference—a sentiment we share as a team, strengthened by our mutual support.

Our projects

We're developing tools that make production processes at Aurubis safer, more efficient, and sustainable, all while increasing value creation to make work easier for our colleagues. Here are some inspiring examples:

AI-Powered identification of underperforming electrolysis cells

High-purity copper is produced through electrolytic refining. Aurubis operates several electrolysis facilities, each larger than a football field and containing over 1,000 cells. Monitoring each cell and quickly identifying those operating suboptimally is quite a challenge. We've developed an AI that continuously monitors process parameters, ensuring optimal deployment of maintenance personnel.

Smelter Dashboard

At Aurubis' primary smelter in Hamburg, copper ore is melted and refined into pure copper through a multi-stage process. To monitor the entire procedure, we developed a transparency dashboard with our onsite colleagues that clearly illustrates the copper's journey and the "heartbeat" of the facility. Data from various sources—such as sensors, material tracking, and lab systems—is regularly collected and processed in the background. The information presented helps our team make informed decisions to optimize processes and continuously enhance the efficiency of copper production.

Material mix optimization support system

As a custom smelter, Aurubis processes a wide variety of raw materials. The smelting process adheres to strict environmental regulations, product quality standards, and process stability requirements. Together with our colleagues from production, we've developed BOSS (Blend Optimization Support System) to ensure an optimal mix of materials while considering all restrictions. This tool assists users in the straightforward planning and booking of material blends for the upcoming days, taking financial aspects into account. As a result, the efficiency and profitability of the smelters are enhanced. So far, BOSS has been implemented in two of our smelters in Germany and Belgium, with plans to roll it out to additional locations underway.
